What to Expect on a Dudhwa Safari

You sit in an open safari jeep with a driver and a naturalist guide. The jeep moves along kutcha roads through tall elephant grass, sal woodland and the channels and marsh that make Dudhwa unlike most tiger reserves. It is a landscape of horizons — grass to the skyline, water hidden in the reeds, birds moving ahead of the vehicle.

The morning drive starts cold and misty; the grass drips, the air is sharp, and the park wakes slowly. The evening drive is warmer, tuned to waterholes and last light, when species come out to drink. Guides read the forest the old way — flattened grass, fresh pugmarks, alarm calls from chital and langur.

Most safaris bring birds, deer and the grassland itself.
